Chapter 17

HALF AN hour later, I was soaked in sweat and glad I hadn’t eaten breakfast so far. I was still slightly nauseous when I carried Sean to the kitchen. On the other hand—we had made it! Sean was clean, wore fresh clothes, and I hadn’t puked. Success!

During the whole procedure, Sean had been unnaturally quiet. When he was in the bathroom with Alex, I heard the two of them chatting nonstop. Maybe Sean had sensed my agitation and decided not to speak. I, at least, was grateful for his silence.

Inside the kitchen, I strapped Sean into his wheelie then pulled out my phone. No call—from either Alex or from Parker. My fingers itched to press the dial-button and demand to know what was going on. I pushed the phone back into my pocket to concentrate on the task at hand.

Even though I’d been nauseous only minutes ago, my stomach growled as I peered into the fridge. I glanced at my watch, decided there was enough time left before Sean would be picked up, and asked, “How about scrambled eggs for breakfast? I’m starving.”

Sean whooped and slapped his hands down on the table. I grabbed the package of eggs, shoved the door closed with a nudge of my hip, and grinned at him. My influence was unmistakable. Sean had become a big fan of warm breakfasts since I began to stay with him and Alex.

I pulled out a bowl, cracked the eggs, and put some small ham cubes into the mass. After flavoring the whole thing, I beat the eggs until they were to my satisfaction. The mundane activity of putting a skillet on the stove, cooking the eggs, and running back and forth to set the table put my mind off Alex.

Sean and I ate our breakfast in silence. I fed him while I ate myself. Afterward I helped him get ready for school. Right on time, the doorbell rang, and Mrs. Cornell was there to pick him up. To my utmost surprise—and relief, I admit—Sean didn’t make a fuss about going to school. He probably believed me that Alex simply had something important to do and couldn’t be here this morning. Sometimes it would be nice to be a kid again, trusting the ones you loved without doubt. The only thing Sean insisted on was his battered plush frog.

Mrs. Cornell was surprised to see only me. She inquired, “How is Mr. Fisher doing? The police officer yesterday said he had an accident? I hope he’s not too badly injured?”

Accident—right. I forced a smile on my face. “He’s got some bruises and a broken wrist, but he’ll be all right again soon.”

Out of the corner of my eyes, I watched Sean clutch his frog tightly. As much as I understood Mrs. Cornell’s concern, now wasn’t the time to talk about it or Sean would freak and decline to go with her.

“Thanks for your concern, Mrs. Cornell, but he’s really doing better. He’s not here because he has some important business to attend to.
